NFIP Pause: What Leon County Residents Need to Know
Last updated: October 7, 2025
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is temporarily paused as of September 30, 2025, pending action by Congress. During this pause, FEMA cannot issue new NFIP policies or renew existing ones.
What this means for you

If you already have an NFIP policy
  • Your coverage stays in effect until your policy’s expiration date.
  • Claims are still being processed (subject to available funds).
  • If your policy is near expiration, the usual 30-day grace period for late renewal payments still applies.
If you applied or renewed before the pause
  • Applications and renewals submitted with payment before Sept. 30 may be completed once FEMA resumes normal operations. Check with your insurance agent.
If you need a new policy right now
  • New NFIP policies can’t be issued during the pause.
  • Private flood insurance is available from other insurers and is not affected by the NFIP pause.
If you’re buying or refinancing a home
  • Some closings or loans in flood-prone areas may be delayed if NFIP coverage is required.
  • Ask your lender about options, including:
    • Assuming the seller’s existing NFIP policy (when eligible), or
    • Using private flood insurance that meets lender requirements.
Floodplain rules are still in effect
  • Leon County will continue enforcing local floodplain regulations. Building and development rules do not pause with the NFIP.
    What you can do now
  1. Check your policy dates and talk to your insurance agent about your status.
  2. If closing on a home, speak with your lender early about private flood insurance or policy assumption options.
  3. Compare private flood insurance quotes to avoid gaps in coverage.
  4. Stay informed via FEMA’s official updates on NFIP reauthorization.
  5. Have questions about permits or flood zones? Contact Leon County Floodplain Management.
