Question/Topic: Veterans - Widows benefits
Answer/Pointer: The Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is paid to the surviving spouse when the death of the veteran happened while on active dutiy, if the death was in some way associated with a recognized service-connected disease or injury or the veteran was rated as permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected disability. In the past, if a widow remarried, her benefits were discontinued permanently. The new change is that benefits will once again be paid to those surviving spouses if the subsequent marriage was terminated by death or divorce. Contact the VA's toll-free number, (800) 827-1000, to speak to a benefits counselor. Source: Ann Landers' column, Tallahassee Democrat, 3/28/01, p. 4D.
