Hughes, Monica . . . Invitation to the Game
(1990)
This tale is a wonderful example of sociological science-fiction. A group of
eight (eventually ten) young people graduate from school in a future earth
with lots of problems. Their cooperative efforts to learn to live
together pay off when they're invited to play a complicated "Game" of virtual
reality. Eventually, they find that this game has real significance, and it's
their skills and talents that give them a place in trying to help humankind
survive. Hughes does a great job of fiving individual personalities to
each member of a lage cast of characters, and the story is thought-provoking
and involving. If you like science fiction, you should definitely enjoy
Invitation to the game. [Gary Crew]
