Request Materials - FAQs

Can I decide whether the library purchases or borrows my request for me?

The library reserves the right to fill your request in the manner that is most beneficial for the library and our patrons, while still delivering the item to you in as timely a manner as possible. If the item you requested cannot be purchased, it will be transferred to Interlibrary Loan in an effort to fill your request.

What is interlibrary loan?

No library can have all the materials to meet all its patrons’ needs. Through the interlibrary loan program (ILL) the library is able to ask another library to lend us materials for our patrons to checkout. Likewise, the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System lends its materials to other libraries for their patrons.

Is there a charge for this service?

Only if the lending library charges us. We always try to request materials from libraries that don't charge fees. We borrow from a library that charges only if you authorize us to do so. Fees are due and payable when you pick up the materials

What materials can be requested through interlibrary loan?

We place no restrictions on the types of materials that can be requested. However, many libraries will not lend their non-print items (DVDs, CDs, etc.) or genealogical materials. We will not request items that the library owns or that have been published within the past 6 months.

How long does it take to get an item through interlibrary loan?

The time varies, but most requests can be filled in 2-6 weeks.

Who can request an interlibrary loan?

Most Leon County Library cardholders are eligible for ILLs. Click here for information on how to get a library card. We cannot process school-related items for current FSU, FAMU or TCC students. These patrons should go to their school libraries. Patrons with outstanding fines may not get ILLs until their fines are paid.

How many items can I request at a time?

Due to heavy demand for this service, we request that patrons submit no more than 10 requests per month.

Can ILL items be renewed?

Renewals must be granted by the lending library. Please contact the ILL staff at least four days prior to the item(s) due date to request a renewal. Items that are overdue cannot be renewed.

Who can I talk to for more information?

Call the Main library at 850 / 606-2665 and ask for Interlibrary Loans.
