Genealogy Research
on the Internet

For Beginners

  • familysearch.org is site provided and maintained by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They have the largest library dedicated to genealogical materials in the world. They have opened libraries all over the country for their members and the general public to help with their family history and genealogical research.

  • Genealogy.com University. Free genealogy classes, updated every few weeks. (Sister site, Genealogylibrary.com=Fee Based)

Internet Resources

  • GaleNet's Biography and Genealogy Master Index, literature and general homework resources. If prompted to login, use lcpl_main as the user name, then enter; at home the password is your library card number.

  • Ancestry Library Edition is the most comprehensive online source of information for conducting genealogical and local history research available. This site is available only from the computers inside the library.

  • AltaVista - Search engine (example: family Smith)

  • CNET'S Search.com - Metasearch more than 800 specialized engines from around the Web.

  • WorldPages.com - contains addresses, phone numbers, e-mail and websites

  • Switchboard.com - contains names, addresses and phone numbers; a leading Internet-based local merchant network interconnecting consumers, merchants and national advertisers.

Genealogical Societies

  • Tallahassee Genealogical Society was established for the purpose of encouraging the development of genealogical knowledge and research skills of its members, and for collecting, preserving, and publishing genealogical and related historical data.

  • Florida State Genealogical Society was founded to promote the study and research of genealogy and local history. The society publishes source materials and family history, while encouraging seminars, workshops and similar educational meetings in the State of Florida.
