Leon County Public Health Unit

In Leon County, Public Health Nurses fulfill critical roles in all areas of Public Health practice. The primary function of these nurses is to direct the delivery of population-based nursing practice and other multi-disciplinary public health practices to meet the core public health functions. These functions include assessment, assurance, and policy development. The range of activities involving the Public Health Nurse include, but are not limited to, case finding, surveillance, screening, health education, care coordination, case management, direct care services, resource utilization and quality improvement. These services are provided in homes, schools, workplaces, community settings, clinical settings, and the new Mobile Health Unit.

Public Health Nurses provide a linkage between epidemiological data, clinical understanding of this data and its impact on the health and illnesses of all populations, not just those at high-risk. Statistics have shown that public health nursing interventions have helped to reduce teen pregnancies, communicable diseases, childhood diseases and morbidity; and, have impacted positive changes in health behaviors.
