Leon County Health Department

health promotion

step up

The Community Health Promotion Program at the Leon County Health Department is urging residents to "Move More, Eat Better" through a year-long promotion of Step-Up, Florida.  A series of monthly walking events are being held at various locations across the county to showcase the variety of city, county, state, and federal walking trails and parks that are available for individuals and families to be physically active.

The first monthly event was held Saturday, September 29 at the Leon Sinks Geological Area as part of National Public Lands Day.  Forty-one participants enjoyed hikes in the area lead by experienced leaders or volunteered to assist with park maintenance.  A birding hike was lead by Mark and Selena Kiser, certified Green Guides; a geological/historical hike by Terry Tenold, Activity Leader with the Florida Trail Association; a family hike by Kate and Gus Taluga, teacher at School of Arts and Sciences; and a geological hike lead by Philip Gerrell, certified Green Guide.  In addition, volunteers worked with Sonny Kimbrough, a U.S. Forest Service volunteer, on maintenance of the park entrance.  The event was held in partnership with the Florida Trail Association and the U.S. Forest Service.

The second event was a walk/bike ride on Saturday, October 20 on the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historical Railroad Trail as part of Greenways and Trails Month.   Forty-eight participants walked or jogged to J. Lewis Hall Park (a 5-mile walk round trip) or took a longer bike ride to the Leon/Wakulla County line or the City of St. Marks.  The Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail trailhead is located just south of Capital Circle on Woodville Highway.  The walk was held in partnership with the Office of Greenways and Trails.  Sunshine Cycles and the Tallahassee Police Department provided free bicycle checks for cyclists, free coffee was provided by Starbucks, and free bagels by Bruegger's Bagels.

St. Marks Step Up Event

The third event was held Saturday, November 10 on the Centerville Conservation Trail, located on Centerville Road 1/8 mile north of the Pisgah Church Road intersection.  This is a newly opened pedway in the Centerville Community and 62 people came out to enjoy the beautiful weather and discover this new community resource.  The event was co-sponsored with Booth Properties and Jon Kohler & Associates.  Free coffee was provided by Bagel Bagel and free bagels were provided by Einstein Bros. Bagels.
