Waste & Recycling
Future Initiatives
- Florida Energy Bill - In July 2008 the Florida Energy Bill became effective. One of the goals under the Energy Bill (HB 7135) is to reduce the recyclable solid waste disposed of at waste management facilities, landfills or incineration facilities by a statewide average of at least 75% by 2020. For more information on this bill please go to our “Publication & Resources” section. (Link to “Publication & Resources”)
- Desk-Side Recycling and Centralized Trash-The Office of Sustainability is making strides towards implementing a program for employees to start thinking about trash. The program will be designed to shift the way in which employees currently view and treat garbage and recyclables, based on using containers that show employees that they actually generate more recyclables than garbage. Ultimately, the program will divert waste and maximize the amount of desk-side recycling.
- Reuse center- the County has put an effort into starting a community resource Reuse Center that would provide free supplies for Leon County classrooms and teachers. This is a great way for businesses to contribute to their community and also save money by eliminating the need for disposal fees. A Reuse Center in our community can help foster partnerships between businesses, non-profits organizations and local government, and provides volunteer opportunities for the community.
