Sustainable Food

Summary & Connection

The Leon County Office of Sustainability promotes policies and programs that support local, sustainable agriculture and food systems; economic development in the region; and access to healthy, culturally appropriate food for all residents. Local food can help reduce a community’s carbon footprint, since from farm to fork; an average dinner travels 1,500 miles. When you buy directly from the local farmers, your dollar stays in your community which in turn builds your local economy. More than 90 cents of every dollar you spend goes straight to the farmer. With industrial foods, only 21 cents will end up in the farmer’s pocket. (Source: http://www.eatlocal.net/why.html)
