HOW should I recycle? - Recycling Do's & Don'ts

Do
make
sure you rinse your bottles and containers.
You can leave on the labels. Remove the caps. |
Don't
put
contaminated paper in your recycling
Soiled boxes such as pizza boxes, napkins, or frozen
food boxes are not recyclable. |
Do
use
paper bags to separate paper from containers
Put all magazines, papers, and paperboard together in one bag. |
Don't
use
plastic bags in your recycling bin
Plastic bags are not recyclable, contaminate the other recyclables, and
will not be picked up. |
Do
break
down your Cardboard Boxes
Lay flattened cardboard (no larger than 3 feet X 3 feet) on top of
your recycle bin to be picked up. |
Don't
put out
boxes larger than 3 feet X 3 feet
Please bring large cardboard boxes to be recycled to the landfill or
rural waste collection centers. |

WHY can't I recycle ____?
Although many
materials are recyclable, Leon County cannot recycle them because there are no markets for
the products at this time. Here are some common examples of materials that
cannot be recycled in Leon County.

Plastic containers
- such as butter tubs, or pill bottles (the rule of thumb on plastic
is that you can only recycle it if has a neck and a twist top)

Plastic Bags -
Leon County does not accept plastic bags; however, some retailers such as Publix or Walmart will accept and recycle plastic bags

Styrofoam - Leon
County has no way to recycle Styrofoam at this time; however, Publix will
accept and recycle Styrofoam egg cartons and trays

Food Boxes -
coated papers, such as juice boxes or paper milk cartons, are not recyclable

Corningware
or Ceramics - Leon County is only able to recycle clear, green and brown glass

can I recycle?
There
are four Rural Waste Collection Centers where Leon County residents can bring
their recycling. They are open to the public from 9:00 am - 7:00 pm, five days a week, closed on
Mondays and Wednesdays.
Leon
County residents can also bring their recycling to the recycling containers at
the Leon County Solid Waste Management Facility (landfill). Hours of
operation are 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00
Saturday, closed Sunday.

WHEN
can I recycle?

Recycling - Residential recycling pick-up is the same day as your
garbage-pick up day in unincorporated Leon county (contact the city of
Tallahassee for City schedule. Don't forget to set our your green recycling bins at
the curb with your gray garbage cart. If you live outside the city limits
and would like to subscribe to curbside pickup, you should contact
Waste Management at (850) 574-3000.
Rural
Collection Centers - Ft. Braden, Woodville & Miccosukee Rural Collection
Centers are open
from
9:00 am - 7:00 pm, five days a week, closed on Mondays and Wednesdays. Blount Rural Collection
Center is open Saturdays 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Tuesday 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
Landfill
Recycling Center - Residents can drop off their recycling at the Leon County
Solid Waste Facility from 7:00 am to
6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturdays and
Closed on Sundays.
