Leon County Recycling is excited to team up with the Big
Bend Victim’s Assistance
Coalition to collect old cell phones that are no longer being used by
our residents. Cell phones can be
dropped off at the following locations for BBVAC:
Leon County Sheriff’s Department Contact:
850-922-3498
Tallahassee Police Department Contact: Jill MacArthur,
850-891-4246
All of the phones collected through this program are donated to the
911 Cell Phone Bank. The 911 Phone Bank was
created by RMS Communications and is
designed to take phones that would otherwise go to waste, refurbish them and
redistribute them to people who may have a need to contact 911 Emergency
Services. Phones are made available to
Police Departments and other Victim Assistance partners. All of the unusable phones
are demanufactured and their component parts are either recycled or
properly disposed of.
If you do not wish to donate your phone, you can always
bring your phone to the Electronics Recycling Department for recycling at 7550
Apalachee Parkway. Call 606-1823 for more information.
Why recycle your old Cell phone?
There are many reasons why cell phones should be recycled.
The main one being that most cell phones contain a rechargeable battery.
The majority of these batteries contain materials which are toxic and
could lead to severe environmental problems if not properly managed.
The second reason is that most phones which go unused are still good.
By recycling these phones into the 911 Phone Bank, you are providing
a phone for someone who would otherwise be unable to get one.
About BBVAC:
The Big Bend Victim’s Assistance Coalition has been in existence for 10 years.
It was created as a mechanism for all of the local Victim’s Advocate
Groups to get together and share ideas and resources.
Members of the coalition include the Leon County Sheriff’s Office,
States Attorney’s Office, Tallahassee Police Department and other local
victim’s right advocates. Several of BBVAC’s
members are partners that take advantage of the 911 Phone Bank.
About the 911 Phone Bank:
In May of 2004, the 911 Cell Phone Bank was created to
provide an ongoing and readily available source of 911 cell phones and funds to
meet unexpected and urgent needs of participating law enforcement and affiliated
victims services agencies. Click here
