WIC is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. This program provides

  • nutrition education and counseling

  • breastfeeding promotion and support

  • health care and social service referrals including referrals for immunizations

  • supplemental nutritious foods for low and moderate income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children

The Division of Women Infants and Children

ELIGIBILITY DETERMINATION:

WIC serves infants, children up to 5 years old, pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and women in the first 6 months after giving birth.   Eligibility is based on both income and nutrition risk.  Income eligibility is set at 185% of the federal poverty guidelines.  Nutrition risk eligibility criteria include, but are not limited to, anemia, factors associated with high risk pregnancy, nutrition related medical conditions, or inadequate growth patterns.  Applicants are required to show current proof of income, identity, and address at time of appointment.

SUPPLEMENTAL FOODS:

WIC provides foods rich in protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C.  Food checks, redeemable at WIC approved grocery stores, are given to participants on a monthly or bimonthly basis. Women and children receive checks for milk, cheese, eggs, fruit or vegetable juice, iron-fortified cereal, and beans or peanut butter.  Women who are exclusively breastfeeding also receive carrots and tuna.  Non-breastfeeding infants receive iron-fortified formula.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT CLASS:

WIC offers free interactive breastfeeding supoort classes every Wednesday from 10:00 - 11:30 at the Roberts & Stevens Medical Center on 1515 Old Bainbridge Rd. (map)
Activities include:

  • discussions
  • videos
  • the latest news on breastfeeding your baby (or baby to be!).
  • Fathers and children are welcome!!!

NUTRITION ASSESSMENT AND COUNSELING:

WIC provides individual nutrition and diet assessment and counseling to all participants.  Participants art taught the relationship between eating nutritious foods and keeping themselves and family healthy.  Eating right during pregnancy is an important factor in helping to ensure a normal birth weight baby.

NUTRITION SERVICES:

Nutrition staff provide nutrition counseling to primary care patients that have been referred from private and public health care providers.  Nutrition classes and/or presentations are conducted for local schools, churches and agencies.
