Brandt Hills block
party brings neighbors together
Neither summer-like temperatures nor brief drizzling rain
failed to dampen the fun of residents of the Greater Brandt Hills
neighborhood who gathered in mid-afternoon on the first Saturday in October
to enjoy their first ever block party. The affair, sponsored by the Greater
Brandt Hills Neighborhood Association (GBHNA), was organized by board member
Sarah Ward.
Nearly 100 neighbors met on the upper end of Halifax
Court, which was barricaded for the event. Homeowners spilled over into the
Ward's driveway and carport to greet their neighbors, chat with old friends
and make new acquaintances.
Special guest Leon County Commissioner Bob Rackleff
was among those who enjoyed the afternoon. In brief remarks, he emphasized
the importance of neighborhood associations in the government process. He
complimented GBHNA for sponsoring the block party and said events such as
today's cook-out help neighbors to bond.
Overheard were comments like “Well, I'll be, you live
around the corner from me!” And, “I see you walking your little dog every
day, but I didn't know who you were until just now.” Cold beverages, hot
dogs with all the fixin's and two long tables loaded with covered-dish
specialties brought by families were heartily consumed.
