StarMetro Kicks Off New 80X Express Route Shuttle to Southwood, Koger Center, and Capital Circle Office Complex
For 8 years, Bob has advocated for expansion of public
transportation to Southwood, the Capital Circle Office Complex and the Koger Center, even when Tallahassee's public
transportation went by the name of TalTran.
His recommendations made at joint Metropolitan Planning
Organization (MPO) and Comprehensive Planning meetings, before
both City and County Commissioners, was a result of belief that
these centers of employment and housing (in District 5) need to
be served by public transportation, as a matter of convenience
and economics.
The old adage, "if we build it, they will come" seems appropriate, as large developments put increased numbers of cars on the road (especially Capital Circle SE), and disabled individuals have been forced to use less convenient and more expensive alternative transit services to get to and from work at these locations.
As Chair of the Transportation Disadvantaged Coordinating Board, and in meeting with public transportation riders and advocates, Bob learned that most individuals who cannot or choose not to drive, would rather avail themselves of public transportation. They relay that it is preferable to using alternative programs and services that one must qualify for, and that require advanced reservations and long wait times.
This is just the type of progress the public transportation system needs, to get people out of the their cars whenever possible, for the sake of conservation and cost savings for community residents. Bob is highly appreciative of Star Metro's Director, Ron Garrison, Southwood, and other entities that brought this project to fruition. He is hopeful it will increase StarMetro's ridership in general, and bring about expanded service into other parts of Leon County.
