WHEREAS, Hazardous Weather Awareness Week is designed to
teach Floridians about the dangers of hazardous weather and
how to prepare for it; and
WHEREAS, The Red Cross reminds us during Hazardous
Weather Awareness Week that hurricanes, floods, tornadoes
and other severe weather events are not the only threats to
our safety, and that all Floridians should have a family
disaster plan in place to handle all types of emergencies;
and
WHEREAS, there are several precautions citizen take to
protect their families during a weather emergency,
including:
Buying a NOAA Weather Radio and testing it weekly;
locating a safe room or safe areas in your home; determining
in advance the best escape routes from your home and places
to meet – one right outside your home and another somewhere
else in your community; identifying an out-of-state friend
as a family contact, so all your family members can call and
tell that person where they are; planning in advance what to
do with your pets if you need to evacuate; posting emergency
telephone numbers by your phones and make sure your children
know how and when to call 911; and stocking non-perishable
emergency supplies and a disaster supply kit in your home.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF LEON COUNTY, FLORIDA that the week of
February 20, 2005 shall be known as
HAZARDOUS WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK
in Leon County, and that the American Red
Cross is commended for it’s efforts to educate the public
about how to prepare for hazardous weather emergencies.
