WHEREAS, a sound natural environment is the foundation of
a healthy society and a robust economy; and
WHEREAS, human activities around the globe cause
environmental damage that threatens human health and our
planet’s ability to sustain a diverse community of life; and
WHEREAS, Earth Day is an ideal time to remind Leon
County’s citizens that they have cost-saving, earth-friendly
waste disposal options available to them, such as backyard
composting and recycling; and
WHEREAS, methods and technologies are available to local
governments to protect the environment and maintain the
Earth’s biological sustainability, addressing issues such as
energy use, transportation, waste prevention, and sprawl;
and
WHEREAS, the Leon County Solid Waste Management
Division’s Recycling Program is participating with the
Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of
Environmental Education, the Council for Sustainable
Florida, the City of Tallahassee and other Florida
businesses and associations in recognizing EARTH DAY.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS of LEON COUNTY, FLORIDA that April 22, 2005 is
hereby designated as
EARTH DAY 2005
in Leon County. We encourage residents,
businesses and institutions to join us in celebrating this
day to honor God’s creation, and to join us in taking steps
to promote the creation of a sustainable society for
ourselves, our children and all of the future generations
who will depend on the Earth’s limited resources to sustain
them.
