WHEREAS, traffic crashes cause more than 42,000
fatalities nationwide each year and are the leading cause of
death for people ages 6 to 33; and
WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and
Motor Vehicles reports that over 3,000 people lost their
lives to traffic accidents in Florida last year; and
WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and
Motor Vehicles reports that there were 36 traffic fatalities
in Leon County in 2003, and 17 fatalities in 2004; and
WHEREAS, poor road conditions and obsolete designs
contribute to more than 15,000 highway deaths annually; and
WHEREAS, safer driving behaviors such as the use of seat
belts, not drinking and driving and obeying traffic laws
would dramatically reduce the number of traffic-related
injuries and deaths; and
WHEREAS, the use of cost-effective roadway safety
improvements such as all-weather signing and markings,
traffic signals, skid resistant pavements and removal of
roadside hazards could also greatly reduce the number of
traffic crashes; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF LEON COUNTY FLORIDA that the week of
October 10, 2005, be hereby declared
PUT THE BRAKES ON FATALITIES WEEK
in Leon County. We encourage all citizens
to consider safe driving habits this week and every week,
and drive as though their lives depended on it. We pledge to
do our part to reduce traffic fatalities by maintaining all
roads and thoroughfares under our jurisdiction according to
the best traffic safety practices available to us.
