WHEREAS, the postal service has been a constant feature
of our national character, and continues to link Americans
to their families and associates wherever in the country, or
the world, they may be; and
WHEREAS, U.S. postal service workers are the engine of
the postal enterprise worldwide, which provides employment
for almost 9 million people, and accounts for roughly 8
percent of America's gross national product; and
WHEREAS, U.S. postal workers in the service of our
country are a first line of defense in the war on terrorism,
delivering more than 20 billion pieces of mail since the
infamous attacks of September 11, 2001; and
WHEREAS, neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of
night stays these couriers from the swift completion of
their appointed rounds.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEON COUNTY BOARD
OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS that the July 13, 2004 be hereby
declared
U.S. POSTAL WORKERS DAY
in Leon County, Florida. We commend the workers of the
United States Postal Service for uniting our nation,
connecting Americans overseas and domestically, for
defending the security of the mail, for protecting our
freedom of commerce and communication, for their faithful
service to our community and our country, and for over 200
years, working to keep our nation one and indivisible.
