WHEREAS, Free the Children is an international
network of children helping children, with the mission of
stopping the exploitation of underprivileged children around
the globe; and
WHEREAS, Free the Children has built more than 350
schools in 23 countries, shipped more than $3 million worth
of medical supplies to children in developing countries, and
established "Leadership Academies" in schools throughout
North America, which teach young people communication and
leadership skills; and
WHEREAS, Over the past eight years, Free the Children
has been instrumental in highlighting the issue of child
exploitation, in all of its insidious forms, including child
labor, prostitution, and forced military conscription of
children, and has been recognized for its accomplishments by
many organizations around the world, including the United
Nations; and
WHEREAS, As members of Free the Children’s youth
network, called Kids Can Free The Children, SAIL High
School students in Leon County, Florida have raised almost
$4,500 toward the building of a much-needed school in an
underdeveloped country; and
WHEREAS, The goal of the SAIL chapter of Kids Can Free
the Children is to raise consciousness about the
exploitive and dangerous living conditions under which so
many children, in so many countries, are forced to exist.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF LEON COUNTY, FLORIDA, that today, Tuesday,
March 23, 2004, be hereby known as
FREE THE CHILDREN DAY
in Leon County, Florida. We salute the
young people of the SAIL High School chapter of Kids Can
Free the Children, and hereby do appoint them as our
honorary Ambassadors for Children’s Rights. We encourage
their energy and idealism, and join with them in opposition
to child exploitation, in all its forms, in our community
and throughout the world.
