WHEREAS, music is the universal
resonance of life, and education the noblest of human
professions; and
WHEREAS, student involvement in school
music activities positively affects other parts of their
lives, including dexterity, coordination, self-esteem,
self-discipline, thinking skills, listening skills, creative
abilities and personal expression; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Harry Martinez, as the
Choral Director of the FSU Developmental Research School,
has taught music to thousands and thousands of our
community’s young people since 1962; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Martinez served at Florida
High School as elementary music teacher from 1962 to 1975,
as secondary music teacher from 1962 to 1998, as Band
Director in 1975, Strings teacher in 1997, and once again as
elementary music teacher from 1999 to date; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Martinez has distinguished
our community and the Florida High School music program by
producing top quality, nationally recognized choral groups
from a traditionally small student body; and
WHEREAS, in addition to teaching music,
Dr. Martinez established the Florida High tennis program,
twice serving as its coach, established the school’s chapter
of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, sponsored the
Calendar Girls and Beaus program, the FHS Bible Club, and
even served as the school’s bus driver in a pinch.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS of LEON COUNTY, FLORIDA, that
TUESDAY, MAY 20th, 2003, BE HEREBY KNOWN AS
HARRY MARTINEZ DAY
in Leon County,
Florida. We celebrate his 41 year career as a an
extraordinary teacher, mentor and friend to generations of
young people in our community. We salute his energy, his
talent, and his commitment to public service, and we
recognize him as a leader in the educational and cultural
life of Leon County. We offer thanks from a grateful
community for his long years of service and sacrifice, and
for sending so many of our young people into the world with
confidence in themselves and with music in their hearts.
