WHEREAS, mesothelioma is a rare cancer
that affects the linings of the lungs, esophagus and
stomach; and
WHEREAS, we now know that the main
cause of mesothelioma is asbestos exposure; and
WHEREAS, 3,000 to 4,000 Americans die
each year from mesothelioma, and up to 3,000 new cases of
the disease are diagnosed each year; and
WHEREAS, there is no known cure for
mesothelioma, and the expected survival time of those so
diagnosed is between 8 and 12 months; and
WHEREAS, in 1999 the Mesothelioma
Applied Research Foundation was founded with the mission of
eradicating mesothelioma through research, education and
awareness, and is dedicated to restoring hope for
mesothelioma patients and their families; and
WHEREAS, in 2003 the organization to
Ban Asbestos and Eliminate Mesothelioma was created in Leon
County, Florida, for the purpose of eliminating mesothelioma
through public awareness, education, patient and family
advocacy, and networking with other affected groups and
individuals.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
LEON COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS that Tuesday,
December 9, 2003 be hereby declared
MESOTHELIOMA AWARENESS
DAY
in Leon County, Florida. We join with
the Leon County organization to Ban Asbestos and Eliminate
Mesothelioma in our community, and call on all construction
professionals, property managers, health professionals, and
citizens to educate themselves about the continuing risks of
asbestos exposure and mesothelioma.
