WHEREAS, the economy and quality of
life of the State of Florida are dependent upon tourism,
recreation and agriculture; and
WHEREAS, it is clear that power plant
emissions cause pollution of air, soil and water, pose a
health risk to humans and wildlife, and contribute to global
warming; and
WHEREAS, Senate Bill 556, currently
under consideration by the United States Congress, would if
passed, significantly lower pollutant emissions from power
plants in Florida and the rest of the nation by January 1,
2007; and
WHEREAS, Senate Bill 556 would also
require the development of incentives to increase energy
efficiency and the development and application of renewable
energy sources; and
WHEREAS, Senate Bill 556 would also
require outdated power plants to comply with the most recent
New Source Performance Standards of the Clean Air Act; and
WHEREAS, the people of Leon County,
Florida expect and are entitled to the cleanest and
healthiest environment that the latest, most up-to-date
technology makes possible.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the
Board of County Commissioners of Leon County, Florida, that
we stand united in support of Senate Bill 556, and urge
members of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives
representing the great State of Florida to stand with us in
support of this reasonable, fair and overdue legislation. We
urgently request that our Congressional delegation take the
bold step of reducing air, soil and water pollution by
supporting and passing Senate Bill 556, which, there remains
no doubt, will serve to protect our health, our environment,
and our future.
