Veteran Services

WWII Memorial located in front of the Leon County Court House The Veteran Services Division counsels and assists veterans and their dependents with processing benefit claims entitled to them through the United States Department of Veterans’ Affairs and other agencies.

On a monthly basis, the Leon County Veteran Services Division conducts an average of 106 interviews, handles 1086 incoming calls and e-mails, and produces 965 documents for the benefit of Leon County veterans and their dependents.

Veterans continue to have a major financial impact in Leon County. To date, in Fiscal Year 2007, VA expenditures for Leon County veterans and their dependents totaled well over $34 Million.

Additionally, as the result of new claims, Leon County veterans and their dependents received an average of $92,510 per month in retroactive payments and $33,341 per month in awards during the last year.

How To Reach Us and Links of Interest

The Leon County Veteran Services Division functions to serve the veterans of Leon County in every capacity including but not limited to the following:

  • Assist veterans and their dependents in filing claims for non-service connected pensions, service-connected disabilities, and other benefits.

  • Assist veterans and their dependents in obtaining medical treatment, transportation, necessary medicines, prosthetic items and adaptive equipment, and payment of medical bills.  

  • Assist veterans and their dependents in filing for educational benefits at universities, junior colleges, vocational institutions, correspondence courses, and job training.  

  • Assist veterans in obtaining VA Home Loan information.  

  • Assist veterans in obtaining military records, correcting military records, and upgrading of discharges.  

  • Assist veterans in formulating appeals when benefits are denied.  

  • Visit veterans and their dependents in hospitals and nursing homes to conduct business concerning their benefits.  

  • Act as a counseling service for veterans and their dependents.

One issue that is most critical for Leon County veterans is VA health care. The VA is conducting a comprehensive planning process to objectively evaluate future demand for veteran health-care services. The planning process is called CARES, Capital Asset Realignment for Enhanced Services. Veterans Health Administration assets are planned to be positioned in a way that results in more accessible quality health care for more veterans. In Florida, veteran enrollees are projected to increase 18% by 2012 and 6% by 2022 over the 2001 enrollment numbers. Proposed Florida panhandle health-care solutions include the following:

  • New bed tower in Gainesville VAMC

  • Contract inpatient care at Jacksonville Navy hospital and Panama City commercial hospitals

  • Increase sharing with Pensacola Navy hospital and share with Eglin AFB hospital

  • Transition Lake City VAMC from a 24/7 hospital to an 8 hour/5 day outpatient clinic

  • New community-based outpatient clinics at Marianna, Palatka, St. Mary’s (GA), and Eglin AFB (Okaloosa County)

  • New specialty outpatient clinic in Marion County
     

  • New joint VA/DoD ambulatory care center in Pensacola

  • Expand Panama City and Tallahassee outpatient clinics
     

  • Institute seamless transition for returning injured veterans
